Christmas Talking Trees

In Rome, just a few steps from Piazza del Popolo, during the Christmas holidays, science and art dance together, creating an intense and poetic experience: "Christmas Talking Trees."

The "enchanted garden"

This "enchanted garden" is the result of a collaboration between Riccardo Valentini, Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2007, artist Marco Nereo Rotelli, and designer Valerio Cenciarelli.

The olive trees, equipped with the revolutionary "TreeTalker" created by Professor Valentini, transform into interactive actors.

Thanks to reactive and dynamic sensors, the trees respond to human touch, communicate their health status, and react to the surrounding presence, offering a spectacle of lights, colors, and emotions. This magic is not just a metaphor, but the result of a scientific investment that combines nature and technology in a single, stunning performance.

The natural rhythms

In the historic monumental garden designed by Giuseppe Valadier 4 devices were instal led on olive trees with the aim of communicating to people the rhythm of trees life. During the day, plants absorb water from the soil, also transporting nutrients to the leaves, while at night this flow slows down until it stops at night. TheTreeTalker® measures the daily rhythm of the sap in olive trees and displays it through a play of LED lights along the grain.

Furthermore, technology has evolved for this project and for the first time TreeTalker® sensors connect humans and plants.

People can approach the tree and with a simple gesture, request a response from the tree, whose lights will change color and pulse rhythm.

We wanted to represent a new way of experiencing Christmas, trying to communicate the beauty of the natural rhythms of the trees and, at the same time, appreciating the symbolic value of the olive tree, the patriarch of human and Mediterranean history.
